Hepatogastroenterology Section

The Hepatogastroenterology Section provides patients with high quality medical services, applying the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Hospitalises patients with benign and neoplastic gastroenterology and hepatological diseases as well as patients with diseases of the biliary tree and pancreas.

The Section performs a significant number of scheduled and emergency endoscopic examinations and therapeutic interventions on outpatients and inpatients daily, including: gastroscopies, colonoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), dilation of esophageal strictures, placement of stents in carcinomas, polypectomies, hemostasis, esophageal variceal ligation, placement of gastrostomy tubes, placement of stents in the bile ducts, removal of gallstones and wireless endoscopy (with capsule) of the small intestine. In addition, esophageal and rectal manometry as well as wireless pH and impedance (impedance) of the esophagus are performed in the motility laboratory.

An Outpatient Gastroenterology Clinic operates daily, while the special clinics for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Hepatological Diseases and the Functional Digestive Diseases (Irritable Bowel) clinic operate on a weekly basis.

The provision of services of Hepatogastroenterology Section also includes the provision of dietary advice in collaboration with the department of Dietetics and Nutrition, the hospital, psychological support, as well as long-term systematic follow-up.

Six resident physicians are trained in the Hepatogastroenterology Section, while residents from other hospitals in Greece or abroad participate in the training program on a rotating basis.
