Professor Ioannis Papanikolaou is a graduate of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with a grade of "Excellent". He acquired the specialty of Gastroenterology at the Academic Department of Medicine at the "Hippokrateio" General Hospital and the Gastroenterology Clinic of the “NIMTS” Hospital of Athens. He holds a PhD from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with a grade of "Excellent". He underwent four years of training in interventional endoscopy and advanced endoscopic techniques (ERCP and EUS) at the Central Interdisciplinary Endoscopy Unit, Department of Gastroenterology, at the Charité-Medical University of Berlin, Campus Virchow Clinic of Berlin in Germany. For the last 16 years he has been working in the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine/Propaedeutic of the Athens Medical School, at the “Attikon” University General Hospital of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.
His teaching work includes courses for undergraduate students of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry, as well as postgraduate courses at the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is the author of numerous chapters in Greek and International textbooks. He practices clinical work including patient wards, emergency and outpatient clinics, as well as emergency and scheduled endoscopies.
His research and publications focus mainly on classical (colonoscopy, ERCP, EUS, capsule endoscopy) and novel endoscopic techniques and applications (NBI, Endocytoscopy, FUSE, Endocuff), as well as new applications of MRI in Gastroenterology, with more than 170 publications in international SCI journals (see https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Papanikolaou+I) and more than 6700 citations (see https://scholar.google.gr/citations?user=ts_jpm8AAAAJ&hl=en), as well as many publications in the Greek literature and presentations in Greek and international conferences. He is a collaborator in various European Research Groups (including two Horizon Europe projects).
He has repeatedly participated in organizational and scientific committees of international and Greek conferences and seminars, as a reviewer in international PubMed-indexeed journals in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and in international conferences, as an expert in live demonstrations, as a trainer in hands-on educational programs and as a chairman or speaker in international conferences and workshops. He is also a member in editorial boards of various international PubMed-indexeed journals. He is an elected Councilor of the Governing Board of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and leads the "membership working group" of the aforementioned Society. He is Vice-President of the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology and President of the Hellenic Society for the Study of Helicobacter Pylori and the Human Microbiome (2024-2025).
