Τhe Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Hematology Unit at the Research Institute of the Second Department of Internal Medicine is focused on translational and basic research protocols referred to Hematological Myeloid and Lymphoid malignancies.
The laboratory is equipped with a Biobank including more than 5000 bone marrow and/or peripheral blood samples (cells, DNA, RNA) from patients with hematological malignancies
The research protocols are performed in collaboration with Research Institutes both National and International. More than 20 doctoral theses have been completed as reflected by the numerous publications of the Hematology Unit in peer reviewed international scientific journals

Our team conducts high-level clinical studies that contribute to the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for various types of cancer. These studies, carried out in collaboration with leading international research centers, aim to improve patient prognosis and personalized treatment strategies.
We focus on investigating novel biomarkers through liquid biopsy, aiming at the early diagnosis and monitoring of therapeutic response in patients with head and neck cancer. This research contributes to the development of non-invasive diagnostic and monitoring methods for the disease.
One of our key research interests is studying the immune response in head and neck cancers, with a particular emphasis on the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Our research seeks to understand how the virus affects immune activity and how this knowledge can be leveraged for the development of targeted therapies.
As part of our research activities, we conduct in vivo experiments to study the role of HPV oncogenes E6 and E7 in oncogenesis. These studies contribute to understanding the molecular mechanisms driving cancer development and progression, paving the way for innovative therapeutic approaches.
