Dimitra Bacharaki, born in Thessaloniki in 1967, is a Director of the National Health System and has been working as a Consultant Nephrologist at Attikon University General Hospital (UGH) since 2003, when the first Nephrology department was founded.

She received her Medical degree with distinction from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1990) and was trained in Internal Medicine at “Theageneion” Hospital of Thessaloniki and in Nephrology at “AHEPA” UGH of Thessaloniki (1998). In between, she worked as a researcher (1992-1993) at the Immunology department of the University Hospital of Brest, France under Professor Pierre Youinou. There she was trained in the laboratory assays of ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) and Affinity Chromatography in her research work of IgA glycosylation in Nephrology. At the same time she participated in the research programs of the immunology department and received a Postgraduate Diploma in “Basic Immunology-Immunopathology”. Her work led to scientific publications, had multiple citations and was referenced to a patent of defective IgA glycation detection kit. In Greece, after the Rural Service in the Prefecture of Evros (1998-1999), she worked as a Consultant Nephrologist at the UGH of Alexandroupolis (1999-2003) under Professor Vargemezis, where she completed her doctoral thesis on the biocompatibility of peritoneal dialysis solutions. There, she served as Head of the Peritoneal department and was educator in the installation of automated peritoneal dialysis program. She has received Postgraduate Diplomas in "Renal Nutrition" (2014) (International Society of Renal Metabolism and Nutrition), "Lipidology" (2017) (Hellenic Society of Atherosclerosis), "Nephropathology" in 2016 (International Society of Nephrology), "Cardiometabolic Medicine" in 2021 (National Kapodistrian University) and "Infectious Diseases" (Professor Giamarellos) in 2023 (National Kapodistrian University). In Attiikon UGH she has served as Head of the Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, as well as in the Clinical Nephrology and Hemodialysis units. She works in the hospital outpatient specialized clinics of Diabetic Nephropathy, Genetic kidney disease and has been involved also clinically and with research works in Peritoneal Dialysis, Diabetes Mellitus - Metabolic Diseases and the Kidney and Paraproteinemias. She has multiple publications international journals. She has participated in Greek and international conferences as a speaker, commentator, chairman, member of the scientific committees. She takes part as an educator of 3rd and 4th year students of the Faculty of Medicine in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the course of Semiology, Nosology and Differential diagnosis-Internal Medicine. She has been a reviewer in many international journals, member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Nephrology and Deltos (History of Medicine). Member of the Hellenic, European and International Nephrological Societies, and the Hellenic Diabetological Society.
