Ογκολογικό Κέντρο της Β Προπαιδευτικής Παθολογικής Κλινικής (ΒΠΠΚ)

Το Ογκολογικό Κέντρο και Μονάδα Κλινικών Μελετών της ΒΠΠΚ αποτελεί κέντρο για την αντιμετώπιση του καρκίνου, προσφέροντας ολοκληρωμένη φροντίδα σε ασθενείς με όλους τους τύπους συμπαγών νεοπλασμάτων. Το Ογκολογικό Κέντρο στελεχώνεται από μια ομάδα έμπειρων και καταξιωμένων ιατρών, νοσηλευτών και διοικητικού προσωπικού, με βαθιά γνώση και αφοσίωση στον τομέα της ογκολογίας.

Στο τμήμα Ημερήσιας Νοσηλείας πραγματοποιούνται πάνω από 1200 συνεδρίες χημειοθεραπείας, ανοσοθεραπείας ή βιολογικής (στοχεύουσας) θεραπείας το μήνα και παρέχεται η δυνατότητα νοσηλείας και υποστήριξης όταν αυτό κριθεί απαραίτητο. Από το 2011, το Ογκολογικό Κέντρο μας έχει γνωρίσει μια αξιοσημείωτη αύξηση στον αριθμό ασθενών που λαμβάνουν φροντίδα στις εγκαταστάσεις μας. Συγκεκριμένα, ο μέσος όρος ημερήσιων επισκέψεων έχει αυξηθεί κατά 117%. Η κλινική μας υιοθετεί μια ολιστική προσέγγιση στην αντιμετώπιση του καρκίνου, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη όχι μόνο την ασθένεια, αλλά και την ψυχοκοινωνική ευημερία του ασθενούς.

Στο τμήμα των κλινικών μελετών του Ογκολογικού Κέντρου διεξάγονται κλινικές μελέτες φάσης Ι, ΙΙ, ΙΙΙ και ΙV με στόχο τη βέλτιστη θεραπευτική προσέγγιση των ασθενών. Οι κλινικές μελέτες φάσης Ι περιλαμβάνουν όλους τους συμπαγείς όγκους, ενώ οι μελέτες φάσης ΙΙ-ΙV πιο ειδικά τους όγκους της κεφαλής και τραχήλου, τα σαρκώματα, τον καρκίνο του πνεύμονα, του δέρματος, του γαστρεντερικού, του γυναικολογικού και του ουροποιογεννητικού συστήματος. Οι ασθενείς συμμετέχουν εθελοντικά στις κλινικές μελέτες και παρακολουθούνται στενά από εξειδικευμένη ομάδα γιατρών και νοσηλευτών. Η κλινική μας συμμετέχει σε ελληνικές και διεθνείς κλινικές μελέτες σε συνεργασία με την Ελληνική Συνεργαζόμενη Ογκολογική Ομάδα (ΕΣΟΟ), την Εταιρεία Ογκολόγων Παθολόγων Ελλάδας (ΕΟΠΕ), την Ελληνική Ερευνητική Ομάδα ΟυροΓεννητικού Καρκίνου (ΕΕΟΟΓΕΚ) και την European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

Scientific – educational activities

Undergraduate Education

Στην κλινική μας εκπαιδεύονται ετησίως συνολικά 60 φοιτητές του 6ου εξαμήνου, 60 φοιτητές 7ου εξαμήνου και 45 φοιτητές 10ου και 11ου εξαμήνου της τρίμηνης εκπαίδευσης στο μάθημα της Παθολογίας. Οι φοιτητές του 10ου και 11ου εξαμήνου έχουν τη δυνατότητα, στο πλαίσιο του rotation στις ειδικές μονάδες της Κλινικής, να εκπαιδεύονται  και στο Ογκολογικό Κέντρο.

In addition, all students of the 12th semester can choose to attend the specialty of Medical Oncology. During undergraduate education, 25 students attend one of the specialties of our clinic annually, while medical students of the University of Athens perform a rotation in the elective Oncology in our clinic.

The training program of medical oncology for medical students includes the examination of hospitalized patients and patients in the one-day chemotherapy section, and attendance of multidisciplinary team meetings, educational courses (journal club, experts’ opinion), outpatient clinics and conferences..

Training of Resident Doctors

Our clinic is also a training center for resident doctors in Medical Oncology, offering them the necessary knowledge and skills for the treatment of cancer. The educational training program includes weekly courses where clinical cases are discussed in collaboration with expert oncologists at a global and national level, bibliographic information (Journal club), Multidisciplinary Team Meetings and Molecular Oncology Councils (Molecular Tumor Board)

VI:Cancer Survivorship Clinic (Supervisor: Kalliopi Kalaitzi Academic Fellow, Doctor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation). It is a clinic that aims to provide scientific guidance regarding the lifestyle of cancer patients, as well as lifelong monitoring for the identification of any early and late psychosocial complications of the disease and treatment.

The Clinic has five fields. Initially, we provide psychological support and, respectively, referral to psychiatrists when necessary. Patients are also trained in stress management techniques, as well as training in the Mediterranean diet and sleep hygiene. At the same time, we also provide prescription of therapeutic exercise, as well as referral to corresponding clinics for cessation of alcohol - smoking and other addictions.

A clinical study is any research conducted on humans and aimed at finding a better therapeutic approach to diseases that are difficult to treat. In a clinical study, patients participate voluntarily and receive the new therapeutic treatment following thorough information and signed consent. Patients who participate in clinical studies are monitored intensively and have an active role in their pharmaceutical care. In addition, they gain access to new treatments before they are widely available. According to law: “The patient's best interestal ways outweighs the interests of science and society.”

There are two categories of clinical trials, multicenter and non-interventional. Multicenter clinical trials are conducted based on the same protocol, in more than one centers in our country or globally, while non-interventional studies are studies involving drug salready approved for use. Clinical trials also follow a series of steps called Phases.

In Phase I Studies, researchers test the new drug or treatment in a small number of individuals to assess safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify adverse events.

In Phase II Studies, the drug is investigated in a larger group of individuals to determine efficacy and further evaluate safety.

In Phase III Studies, the drug under study is administered to large groups of patients to confirm efficacy, safety, compare it with established treatments (standard of care), and collect information that will permit the safe use of the drug or treatment.

Phase IV Studies (post-approval studies), which refer to drugs that have been approved and released on the market, aim to collect additional information regarding adverse reactions and efficacy.

Several clinical studies are being conducted in our department, which aim at reinforcing the development of more effective treatments for cancer. Specifically, we participate in Greek (in collaboration with the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group) and international studies (in collaboration with European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer, Eastern Oncology Cooperative Group).
